Vista View | Principal's Message for April |
Oki Vista Heights School Community, As we approach the spring equinox, we’re noticing longer days and the welcome signs of a new season of growth and renewal. With Spring Break just around the corner, we hope your family enjoys a restful and rejuvenating time together. For those celebrating, we also extend warm wishes of Eid Mubarak to you and your loved ones. We look forward to welcoming students back Monday, March 30, 2026. National Food Program Agreement Students may have come home sharing excitement about additional food being provided in classrooms this month. The Alberta Government has recently allocated federal funding through the National Food Program Agreement to enhance and expand school food programs for the month of March. We have enjoyed being creative with healthy food options at school this month. As always, we will continue to communicate and share details of all food being served in our weekly Vista View. Student Learning Conferences | March 19-20 Reminder that there is still time to join us for in-person conferences on:
Please log in to SIS to book or call the office. Email teachers if you want to request an alternate day after spring break. Eco Club | Sustainability & Water Restrictions A small group of student leaders is taking action within our school community, supporting initiatives such as reducing the use of plastic spoons and encouraging their peers to adopt more sustainable practices. Inspired by recent water restrictions in the city and with World Water Day approaching, students are also learning about water conservation and filtration. As part of this work, we kindly ask that students bring a spoon from home on soup days to help limit waste. Our Grade 3 & 4 students have been learning that plastic spoons cannot be recycled and often end up in landfills. This Thursday, we will also participate in Earth Hour by turning off some lights as a way to recognize and reflect on our impact on the environment. Looking ahead to April and Earth Day, we may also take part in a “boomerang lunch” program some days, where students bring home any garbage from their lunches to help build awareness of waste. We will continue our efforts at school to compost and recycle as part of our commitment to caring for the environment. Road Safety | Drivers & Pedestrians We would like to remind all families about the importance of road safety during drop-off and pick-up times. Please avoid double parking, pull over on the correct side of the street, and encourage your child to use designated crosswalks when crossing. We have also noticed some illegal U-turns in the area; we kindly ask families to take the extra few minutes to safely drive around the block instead. These small actions make a big difference in keeping all of our students safe. In April, we will also be engaging students in conversations and learning about pedestrian and road safety to further support safe habits in and around our school community. https://www.calgaryparking.com/content/dam/parking/documents/calgary-parking-superstar-booklet.pdf Travel Safe Student Video Contest | April 15 Deadline Need a fun spring break activity? Create a 30-second video to help make Calgary’s streets safer – by walking, wheeling, riding, or parking safely around schools. Contest is open to all Calgary students K-12 (individuals, classrooms, groups or families). Submit videos by April 15, 2026. https://www.calgaryparking.com/about/safety-and-compliance/parking-safety/safe-schools.html Grade 6 | Photo Day Dress up! We’re excited to have a photographer visiting the school to capture our students. These photos will be used as part of our June celebration as our students prepare to move on from Vista Heights. Swimming Lessons | April 6-9 We are excited to offer swimming lessons for all students, K-6, an opportunity that can be difficult for schools to access. Thanks to funding from the Education Matters Grant and support from our School Council, these lessons are provided at no cost to families. Students will need to complete a swimming ability form and may be required to wear a lifejacket, with certified lifeguards supporting all instruction. We recommend that students leave their swimsuit and towel at school throughout the duration of the lessons. If there are any considerations or concerns, please connect directly with your child’s teacher. Celebration of Learning | April 29 Families are warmly invited to join us for our Celebration of Learning, an assembly where each class will showcase and share highlights of their learning. This special event will take place on Wednesday, April 29 in the morning (time to be confirmed closer to event). We look forward to welcoming you into our school to celebrate the growth, creativity, and achievements of our students. Calgary Police Services (CPS) | Youth Education Program Youth Education Program is a proactive, strengths-based model of teaching and learning where police and schools partner together to actively build positive relationships, create safe communities and prepare children for the challenges of our complex, changing world. We are lucky to have a constable join our school in April to visit each classroom and deliver lessons around problem solving, healthy choices, respectful communication, building healthy relationships, being digitally safe, and serving others to build an inclusive, resilient community. School Council | April 7 Meeting A huge thank you to our School Council members who volunteered their time and energy at our biggest fundraising event. Your dedication and continued support help enhance learning opportunities for every student at Vista Heights, and we are truly grateful for all that you do. We also warmly welcome any parents who are interested in getting involved. School Council meetings are short, informative, and offer a sneak peek into upcoming events, as well as meaningful ways to support and engage with our school community. Our next meeting is Tuesday, April 7 at 6:00pm. Hope to see you there! Upcoming Events
