October Learning Update
Dear Families,
Thank you for your continued support! Each month you will receive a classroom update. This will provide an overview of topics and concepts covered in class and will outline learning activities for the upcoming month.
This month we...
· Solved real-life money problems using addition and subtraction, told time on analog clocks, expressed time of day, converted between hours, minutes, and seconds, and solved duration problems.
· Continued phonics and spelling work, explored prefixes and morphology, and practised reading articles and writing the gist using key ideas from texts.
· Learned more about responsible citizenship, Canadian provinces and territories, hazardous materials and safety symbols, and created recyclable-art projects.
Next month we will...
· Continue developing multiplication and division strategies.
· Further strengthen paragraph writing using information from texts.
· Continue learning about Canadian history and energy.
Our Commitment to Truth and Reconciliation...
This month, students participated in a scavenger hunt around the school playground. They observed plants, animals, insects, and natural features to become more aware of the land and living things that share this place with us. Through these activities, we discussed how showing respect, responsibility, and care for the land and for one another helps us build positive relationships within our school community.
Ask your child:
· How to calculate elapsed time or solve a money problem.
· How we can care for the land and people around us.
Please Note:
1. Literacy and Numeracy Student Screener Reports were sent home with students in an envelope on October 26. Please check with your child if you have not yet received it.
2. Students in Grades 4-12 will participate in the CBE Well-Being Survey between November 1 and November 26. Please see the survey link: https://go.blueja.io/qjcYQx-xhUGEiczKuSdpyg

We hope you are enjoying this fall weather! It has been a great start to the school year.
Each month you will receive a classroom update. This will provide an overview of topics and concepts covered in class and will outline learning activities for the upcoming month.
This month we... |
• Strengthened our reading and writing skills by practicing phonics, exploring prefixes such as re-, pre-, un-, dis-, mis-, and non-, writing complete sentences, and building fluency, vocabulary, and comprehension through read-alouds.
• Used math in practical ways by reading analog clocks, identifying and counting Canadian coins, and solving addition and subtraction problems connected to buying and selling items.
• Explored Canada by locating provinces and territories on a map and learning about treaties as well as the histories, cultures, and experiences of Indigenous peoples in Canada.
• Investigated responsible waste management by identifying types of waste, creating artwork from recyclable materials, and developing personal plans to reduce, reuse, and recycle.
Next month we will... |
• Continue building our reading and writing skills through new literacy activities and classroom texts.
• Extend our mathematical thinking through new concepts, problem-solving, and real-life applications.
• Begin new learning across our other subject areas through hands-on activities, discussion, and inquiry.
Ask your child... |
• What are some ways you can reduce waste at home or at school? Tell me about your personal waste reduction plan.
• Can you show me something you learned about Canadian money, telling time, or the map of Canada?
