Good Morning Vista Heights School Community
Hard to believe it is already May! This morning we have guests from Evergreen Theatre putting on a free performance for the students and the set up looks amazing. I hope the students come home talking about this experience.
2024-2025 School Planning | Registration & Special Activities
Thank you for all of the parents who let us know if they will be returning to Vista Heights next year. We are excited for the new school year and continue to have open spots available in our full day kindergarten program. Please let neighbours residing in Vista Heights know that registration is open.
For family members currently residing in Vista Heights, if you have indicated your intention to enroll in an alternative program next year, please know that your program decision for the year has to be finalized by September 27, 2024. We are happy to have a conversation to help families make an informed decision, so please reach out if you would like to schedule a meeting with the administration team.
We are excited to announce that we have been working hard to prepare for the 2024-2025 school year by applying for various funding supports to support organizations within the school. This will enhance our curriculum delivery, including both a dance and artist-in-residency grant.
We also excited to confirm government funding for our breakfast program to continue next year. This is in addition to our daily brown bag lunch program and weekly hot soup program. We are grateful for the generous support from Brown Bagging for Calgary Kids, Meals on Wheels, Breakfast Club of Canada, and SNP to ensure we a balanced nutritional program for students to have healthy options during the day.
Provincial Achievement Tests | Grade 6 PATs
The provincial government made an announcement that ELAL and Math PATs will not be occurring this school year. Instead they are asking for volunteers to field test the new online program in alignment with the new curriculum. The Science and Social Studies PATs will still occur and will take place on June 19 and 20, 2024. These achievement tests will be strictly online and teachers are working hard to prepare for this new delivery system.
CBE & Provincial Assessments | Spring Reassessments
Kindergarten children who achieved “minimal” or “developing” scores on any AFRS subtests in November and December will need to be reassessed on those subtests by the end of May.
- Students in Grade 1 who scored at-risk in January in the literacy assessments (LeNS, CC3) and numeracy assessment will be reassessed by the end of May.
- Students in Grade 2-3 who scored at-risk in the fall in the literacy assessments (LeNS, CC3) and numeracy assessment will be reassessed by the end of May.
Understanding Universal Screeners
Human Sexuality Education | Grades 4-6
As part of the Physical Education and Wellbeing curriculum, students in grades 4-6 have the opportunity to learn about human sexuality education. As part of the Education Act, parents have voice in whether they want their child to participate or not. Parents are encouraged to complete the permission/exemption form to indicate if they wish their child to participate in the learning or have alternative programming during this time. This instruction will take place Monday May 13 to Thursday May 16, 2024.
The following websites can help you talk to your child about sexuality. The information on these websites is accurate, objective and is supported by Alberta Education. https://teachingsexualhealth.ca/parents
School Council Fundraising | Kernels & Casino May 28 & 29
We are incredibly lucky to have a committed School Council who has arranged two fundraisers to support programming for Vista Heights students. The actions of these committed parents ensure that students can experience on-site and off-site learning opportunities with zero cost to parents. Thank you so much for your support for our school community. Parents are always welcome at the meetings and there are various ways in which you can get involved. The next parent council meeting is Monday, May 13, 2024 at 6pm.
If you are interested in purchasing Kernels popcorn, please complete the forms sent home with your students and send money to school by May 15, 2024.
There are only a few spots needed for the casino fundraiser event on May 28 & 29, and there is no need to have police clearance completed if you are interested in volunteering. Please email the school if you are available to support this event.
Thank YOU Council & Enhancement:
- Kindergarten Reading House Field Trip ($250)
- New Projector for Gymnasium (~$31K)
- Grade 1-2 Teacher’s Pet (~$500)

Warm regards,
Ms. Jessica
