Vista View | Principal Message for January

Good Morning Vista Heights School Community,

Happy New Year Vista Heights, Welcome 2024!

Attention | Punctuality and Attendance

Just a friendly reminder about the importance of arriving on time for class. Instruction starts promptly at 8:50am, so we encourage you to be present and prepared by arriving before the bell at our soft entry time of 8:40 am.

If, for any reason, you are unable to attend, please notify the attendance line of 403-777-6000 extension 1. This will help us avoid sending unnecessary School Messenger notifications and allow us to better understand and support your family’s needs regarding absences. Thank you!

Report Cards | January 30, 2023

Today, your child’s report card will be available to view in your MyCBE account. The report card is one of the ways teachers communicate how your child is progressing in their learning.  Students accessing support through an Individual Program Plan will have their IPP’s sent home on January 30, 2024 for review and signature as well.

Elementary Clubs | Flex Friday

With the cold months of winter, we're excited to offer chances for classes to come together and enjoy some fun activities. Students can now register for different elective clubs that will take place on the last Friday of the month, we're calling this initiative 'Flex Friday.'

During Flex Friday, students can choose to join a teacher-hosted club of their preference. Our upcoming Flex Friday is scheduled for February 2, 2024. This opportunity is open to students from Kindergarten to 6th grade, allowing them to interact with friends and siblings in an enjoyable learning environment.

Parent/Student Voice & Vista Action | Recess Lunch Clubs

Started this month, teachers are organizing a range of clubs for students to either join or opt for regular recess activities. These clubs encompass the Polar Bear Club, Hearts Club, Reading Club, Zen Club, Chess Club, GSA Club, Lego Club, Active Expression Club, and Leadership Club (SWAT). Each club operates on its own designated time and schedule. Students have the flexibility to choose a club that aligns with their interests or participate in the standard recess routine. All clubs are completely optional.

School Updates | Staffing

As mentioned earlier, Ms. Angela’s last day will be Friday, February 2, 2024. Her replacement in the office will be Ms. Freda who starts with us Monday, February 5, 2024.

Additionally, Alberta Education provided a small amount of money for literacy and math intervention for grades 1-5. This ten-week intervention comes with a change in schedule, where Mr. Graham will begin teaching physical education one day a week to allow for Mr. Pivarnyik to support the academic intervention role.

School Updates | School Development Plan (SDP)

The Vista Heights School Development Plan, a comprehensive framework accessible on the school's website, embodies a holistic approach that recognizes and nurtures the spirit, heart, body, and mind of each child. Within the framework's 'Spirit' domain, a concerted effort has been made to foster cultural safety, celebrate diversity, and promote inclusion, all while empowering the unique gifts of every child.

In the realm of the 'Heart' domain, teachers at Vista Heights School have dedicated themselves to advancing social-emotional learning within classrooms. This commitment is evident in their focus on the outcomes outlined in the new K-6 Physical Education & Wellbeing curriculum. The results are palpable, as we've observed, heard, and felt remarkable progress across all grade levels. This progress not only influences individual regulation but also enhances readiness to learn, reflecting the positive impact within our 'Body' domain.

Adhering to the philosophy that the spirit is to be, the heart is to belong, and the body is to do, our efforts extend to nurturing the 'Mind' to know. In this context, our focus is on refining and strengthening reading and numeracy skills. By concentrating on these foundational academic elements, we aim to provide a robust foundation for cognitive development and academic success. This holistic approach ensures that the growth and well-being of each child at Vista Heights School are addressed comprehensively, fostering a supportive and enriching learning environment.

Student Safety is Important | School Safety Patrol Team

We are grateful for the staff and students who volunteer their time to support our AMA sponsored School Safety Patrols program.  This commitment has many expectations and privileges.  Ensuring student safety and taking a leadership role are critical parts of being a member of the Patrol team. To keep crossing at our sidewalks safe we are kindly asking families to please support your child arriving at 8:30am to have students volunteering for patrols prepared to start at 8:35am.

Vista Heights has also added additional signage as we would love to organize a parent drop-off location on the north side of the school to allow enough space for the various buses who require the east side of the school for drop off.

Volunteer at Vista Heights!

This is a good time to consider volunteering at the school and getting your police clearance. We will need parent support for future field trips.

Upcoming events where volunteers would be welcomed:

  • March 20: Gr 1-2 field trip to the Calgary Zoo
  • March 18-22: Scholastic Book Fair
  • April 30: Gr 5-6 field trip to Fish Creek
  • May 28: Gr 3-4 field trip to Landfill Excursion
  • May & June: Lots of trips!
  • June 3: Grade 5 field trip to Weaslehead
  • June 6: Gr 3-4 field trip to Calgary Zoo

Alberta Education Assurance Survey | Parents, Students, Teachers

Every year, Alberta Education surveys students, their parents, and all teachers on behalf of schools and school authorities to assess what is working well and where there is room for improvement. As a small school, students in grades 4-6 and their parents will be surveyed.

Alberta Education will mail parents/guardians a single-use Random Access Code (RAC) mailed through Canada Post to complete the survey online (English/French).  To support the diverse school community at Vista Heights, we have requested alternative languages. The translated surveys will be printed at the school and given to specific families (Arabic, Urdu, Chinese, Tagalog & Spanish).
