Vista View Principal's Message for October

Dear Vista Heights Families:

Annual Forms | Demographic Forms

A friendly reminder that parents are expected to verify their demographic information annually. This includes health plans, media consent, and the opportunity to register as a volunteer. It's also the time to ensure that emergency contact information is correct for those who can pick up and support your child.

CBE has moved digital for this annual report. Please access your MyCBE Account to verify your information.

Annual Fees | MyCBE Account

Student Supplies

You do not need to purchase school supplies, as these will be purchased by the school.  There will be a School Supply Fee of $40 for grades K-6, which will be posted to your MyCBE Account at the end of October 2024.

Lunch Fee

If your child(ren) will be eating lunch at the school, there is a supervision fee. Attendance is taken daily. Parents can register their child(ren) for lunch on their MyCBE Account. The fee is $305.00 for the year; If your child(ren) will be going home for lunch, there is no fee, and they will be home for the entire lunch hour, including recess. There is a $5 drop-in fee per day if you do need to make supervision arrangements at the school.

If financial assistance is required, you will need to submit documents to request a fee waiver. This can be done on your MyCBE Account.

MyCBE Account

Each family will need to create a MyCBE Account. You will need your child's CBE ID#.  With this account you will register for lunch supervision, pay your school fees, view your child's report card, sign up for parent/teacher conferences, and much more.

Please contact the office if you need any assistance accessing your MyCBE Account.

Photo Day | October 15

Lifetouch will be at Vista Heights School on Tuesday, October 15. Students will be able to pose for both individual and class photos. CBE’s School District Use of Personal Information outlines that we use these annual photos for student identification. Lifetouch also offers options for families to purchase these photos, including class photos. If you don’t want your child to be included in the group photo, please contact the school beforehand, and we will ensure they are not photographed.

Photo retakes for individual photos will take place in November.

Learn Alberta | Universal Screeners

Beginning in the 2024-25 school year, enhancements to the early years literacy and numeracy assessment requirement will include:

  • Mandatory screening assessments in September and January for all students in grades 1 to 3, with a follow-up assessment in June for those students requiring additional supports after completing the January assessment.
  • Mandatory screening assessments in January for all students in kindergarten, beginning in January 2025.

These assessments are formative and meant to complement, not replace, day-to-day teacher observations and classroom assessments. They provide information that must be interpreted, used and communicated within the context of regular and continuous assessment by classroom teachers.

Details on the types of assessments being adminstermined are outlined in this document:

Literacy Block & Flexible Groupings

All students at Vista Heights are working diligently on literacy, focusing on both reading and writing skills. All students are supported through explicit and systemic literacy instruction in the mornings, so it is critical they arrive on time to receive full instruction in these essential skills.

Students in Grade 4-6 will be supported in small literacy and math groups, with fluid and flexible groupings targeting foundational skills to support all learners.  As they progress through the year, students may have various teachers supporting their learning.

Mount Royal University Practicum Students

These candidates will be work with several students under teacher supervision.  Although their fall courses focus on literacy, they will be engage in various subject areas.

Volunteers

We have a number of field trips coming up. If you would like to volunteer in the school or on a field trip, a CBE Volunteer Clearance must be completed. Parents may not attend field trips without this clearance. If you have questions or concerns, please contact the office.

Art Residency | Ewa Sniatycka

Thanks to the generousity of Parent Council and a grant from the Alberta Foundation for the Arts, all students in K-6 will have the opportunity to work alongside process artist Ewa Sniatycka. Ewa is skilled in various art techniques and will collaborate closely with teachers to align projects with curricular outcomes. Depending on the class, students may work with clay, natural dyes and weaving techniques, felting, or producing their own materials from the natural environment.
